۱ LOCAL, EVALUATION & REGISTERED OPERATION

  * LOCAL OPERATION *

Local operation is intended merely for the Sysop to try the door straight
from the archive, before installation and not for normal play. Merely run
the setup program to create a configuration file then type the following to
  run:
                                doorname /LOCAL

Where doorname is the A.S.S.I.S.T., Inc. door your evaluating. This will run
the door using the supplied Sysop name in the CFG file as the player.

  * EVALUATION OPERATION *

This and all A.S.S.I.S.T., Inc. Door Games file dated 8-1-95 and after
will not expire or stop running. They will however randomally select a range
from 14 to 21 days in which they reset the scores. This will allow you
uninterrupted play without worry of the door ceasing to work. The game also
keeps an .TPD file in which the number of times this door is played can be
found. This will tell you exactly how many times the door has been played
since installation. This file is never reset by the game but may be deleted
at anytime to start a new count. See FEATURES for information on Required
  Registration features.

  * REGISTERED OPERATION *

To run as a registered door requires a KEY file. The registered version of
this door enables the Make-Up, Play Ahead Features & Bulletin Maker features
and will also stop score resetting. Without a registration these great
features stay dormant. See Features for more information. Upon registering
you will receive a registered KEY file which will not expire.

Also, as a registered door the data editor is enabled which will allow
you to edit all the doors data files. This is handy for those times when a
user may be disconnected from the BBS prematurely while playing, and you
will be able to edit that users game record to allow them to continue or
replay the games for that day.

۱ COMMAND LINE SWITCHES

The following command line switches are available in both BATCH & COMMAND
  LINE setups.

/C filename - This option allows the sysop to over-ride the default
doorgame.CFG configuration filename and pass a config-
uration filename of choice to the door. This is here
for the purpose of adding flexibility if the sysop so
desires to use more than one configuration file. The
door however, in most cases including multi-node should
only need to use the default.

/N node # - This option allows the sysop to pass the current node
number to the door. This option over-rides any other
settings. Syntax could be used as /N%1.

/P player - This option allows the Sysop to pass the players name
via command line. The main intention of this option is
to allow sysop's not using DOOR.SYS to pass the users
Alias name to the door via command line.

/FOSSIL - This option allows the Sysop to force the game to use
it's internal fossil routines and not standard com
ports. In most cases the door will run fine even if
you are using a fossil driver and do not specify this
                     parameter.

/ALIAS - This option forces the games to use the users alias
name in the DOOR.SYS file. This option only works with
the DOOR.SYS file. For other options see /P above.

ALTERNATE COMMAND LINE SWITCHES - Not used for normal BBS execution.

/LOCAL - This option is intended for the Sysop to take a quick
look at the door before installing to the BBS. It is
not intended to be used for daily local play and should
not be used for such, though it will work.

? - Has the game to display limited command line help.

۱ FOSSIL SUPPORT

Fossil support is available in the door game. If you use a fossil driver
and wish the door to use it then just specify /FOSSIL on the command line
  when running the game, ie:
                           DOORNAME.EXE /FOSSIL

Where DOORNAME is the name of the JNS Software door game you are running.

In the door's setup utility simply specify the port number to use and NOT
  the ports BASE ADDRESS.

If an error occurs when accessing the fossil the game will send a short
message and then abort. To use a standard com port just remove the /FOSSIL
  from the command line.

۱ MULTI-NODE FEATURE NOW FREE

All door games run as Multi-Node capable. There will be no difference in
charge between Single and Multi-Node applications. The doors will be fully
Multi-Node functional even in the unregistered versions. There will no longer
be any difference between Single Node and Multi-Node KEY's, for any
registered KEY will support both modes of operation.

On 8-01-95, or there about, JNS released several new doors and upgrades
which implement this new method. All other JNS Doors will implement this new
method on there next release. These can be easily recognized for it will be
the release following the current 1/2 versions that are now available.

۱ ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES EXPLAINED

A variable is a word that can be assigned a value with a DOS SET command
which gives you the ability to pass values to programs or batch files. Most
BBS Software use this method to make needed information readily available
for use. For example, Wildcat BBS systems use the WCNODEID variable to set
the node number for each node in a Multi-Node setup. This way the BBS and
utilities can easily access the value of this variable from the DOS environ-
ment and retrieve the proper setup for that node.

JNS Doors utilizes this convention by accepting the name of this Node
variable in the configuration file. When the door executes it retrieves this
name from the configuration file and then looks for it in the DOS environment
and retrieves the value that was assigned to it.

Based on the node number it receives it reads in the node information for
the correct COM PORT, IRQ and DROP FILE PATH for the executing node from the
 NODEINFO.DAT file.

IF YOUR BBS DOES NOT USE ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES you have two choices:

#1. You can add them. Select a name such as NODEID and add the line:

           SET NODEID=1

to your BBS batch file. This only needs to execute one time so
add it close to the top of the file out of the BBS loop. You add
this for each node of your BBS changing the number for each node.

#2. If your BBS has the ability to pass the node number with a switch
setting you can pass the node number on the doors command line with
the /N switch (see above). If your BBS does not support such a
switch you are forced to use option #1.

#3. UH! If your throughly confused please don't beat your head against
the table. Send me an email at: support@assist-inc.com.

۱ NOTES OF INTEREST & PROBLEM SOLVERS

This game does not require any monitoring program for dropped carrier. It
automatically detects this and exits back to the BBS.

This door DOES NOT require any runtime modules to run. It will run as-is
without any aid from outside utilities.

A.S.S.I.S.T., Inc. has several card games as doors. And a particular
problem shows up that can be controlled by the remote user. Some Terminal
programs have a default setting of ON for Compu-Serve B file transfers. If
this is on, the Terminal Program will strip the ASCII Code 3, which is a
CLUB character used on the card. Have your users set this to OFF if CLUBS
fail to appear on the cards.
